Poultry Feed Sampling→

This is Jessica's own undergraduate fieldwork, not a method she read about. The sampling described here was the first stage of her B.Sc. final-year project at Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, submitted in July 2021 as Antibiotic Sensitivity Assessment of Bacteria Isolates from Poultry Feed Sold in Enugu Metropolis. She collected the feed herself from retail vendors across the Ogbete and Abakpa markets, choosing vendors and sampling points so that the material would represent feed actually reaching poultry in the area rather than whatever was easiest to obtain. Twenty-four isolates came out of that material. Each was cultured on nutrient, blood, MacConkey and Salmonella-Shigella agar, then identified through biochemical reactions, wherein a decision made at the market weeks earlier either held up or did not. Working aseptically at collection mattered because contamination introduced there would have travelled through isolation into every susceptibility result, and no amount of care later would have recovered it. The project sat inside a degree she finished as valedictorian, with First Class Honours and a CGPA of 4.74 out of 5.00. She presented at the Nigerian Association of Microbiology Students national conference at the University of Calabar that same year, and carried the same sampling discipline into her national service posting the following January, as a microbiologist in the Food Safety Control Unit at Amuwo-Odofin, Lagos.
